Position Title Counselor
Position Summary

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director, he/she is responsible for developing and implementing the counseling component of the program and supervising assigned staff. The Upward Bound Counselor works closely with appropriate College staff and represents the College when interacting with external agencies and individuals in the performance of the duties which are state in this job description. The counselor provides academic, career, and financial aid counseling to program participants through interviews, workshops, and special events. Also provides college exploration and cultural enrichment through college tours and field trips.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Counsels individuals to help them understand and overcome issues that may affect their academic progress

• Provides advisement on course and program selection, class scheduling, study habits, and career planning

• Uses interviews, transcripts, report cards, and tests to identify individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education

• Conducts follow-up interviews with counselees to determine if their needs have been met

• Confers with parents/guardians, teachers, school counselors, and administrators to resolve issues affecting student’s academic progress

• Plans trips and activities to expose students to colleges/universities and to provide cultural enrichment

• Makes regular presentations to schools, community organizations, and social service agencies

• Actively recruits students by distributing and collecting program applications; ensures that prospective participants are eligible as stipulated by program regulations

• Provides guidance to new program counselors

• Assists with the planning and implementation of overall program

• Develops innovative, creative curriculum that correlates with New Jersey core curriculum standards and program objectives; assists in determining program delivery methods

• Coordinates activities with necessary staff, consultants, faculty, and/or volunteers

• Assists in the development of flyers, newsletters, and/or brochures

• Recommends purchases, e.g., equipment, educational materials, etc

• Maintains records and databases on student and program activities

• Attends meetings and produces weekly progress reports and other required documentation

• Must obtain the required number of student recruitments, as specified by Assistant Director.
Hour of work:
Position requires flexible hours and includes some evenings and Saturdays (half-day); NJ or PA Driver’s License required and a car; Position contingent upon grant funding

Required Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field; One to three years of related experience
